EV Loan in Nepal 2083/84: Rates, Down Payment and Banks with Green Loans
Electric cars are now the default choice for many Kathmandu buyers. Here is how the loan side works, and where an EV loan differs from an ordinary auto loan.
- Private EVs follow the same rule as petrol cars: loan up to 60%, at least 40% down.
- Large electric vehicles for public transport can be financed up to 80% under the FY 2083/84 monetary policy.
- Several banks run dedicated EV loans, some floating and some fixed-rate. The live list is below.
- An EV usually costs far less to run, so the total cost over a 5-year loan can be lower even when the price is higher.
The down-payment rule for EVs
NRB's loan-to-value cap does not distinguish between fuel types for private vehicles: a private EV, like a petrol car, can be financed up to 60% of its value. In its monetary policy for FY 2083/84, NRB raised the limit for large electric passenger vehicles used in public transport to 80%, to help operators replace diesel buses.
So on a Rs 45 lakh private EV, the bank can lend up to Rs 27 lakh and you put in at least Rs 18 lakh.

"Fixed" products lock the rate for the term; the rest are floating (base rate + premium) and show the bank's published range. A dedicated EV product is not automatically cheaper than the same bank's normal auto loan, so compare both.
EV vs petrol: the total cost
The loan is only part of the cost of owning a car. An EV is charged mostly at home, and has no engine oil or most of the servicing a petrol car needs. Over five years, the running-cost saving is often large enough to cover a higher purchase price. Use the EMI calculator with both cars' loan amounts, then add your monthly fuel or charging bill to each to see the real difference.
What to ask the bank
- Is the EV rate a separate product, and is it lower than your normal auto loan for me?
- Fixed or floating? If fixed, for how long, and what happens after?
- Is the battery covered by the insurance the bank requires?
- Any EV discount on the service fee?

Frequently asked questions
How much loan can I get for an electric car in Nepal?
Up to 60% of the vehicle's value for a private EV, the same as for a petrol car, so at least 40% is paid upfront. Large electric vehicles used for public transport can be financed up to 80%.
Are EV loan rates lower in Nepal?
Some banks run dedicated EV or green loan products. They are not always cheaper than the same bank's regular auto loan, so compare both rates before choosing.
Can I get an 80% loan for an EV in Nepal?
Only for large electric passenger vehicles used in public transport, under NRB's FY 2083/84 monetary policy. Private EVs remain capped at 60%.
Is a fixed-rate EV loan a good idea?
A fixed rate protects you if base rates rise, but it usually starts higher than the floating rate. With base rates low today, compare the fixed rate with the top of the floating range before deciding.
