What changed this year
- The 1% band doubled from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, so most salaried people now pay only 1% on their first Rs 10 lakh.
- One table for everyone. Single and couple schedules were merged; marital status no longer matters.
- The top rate fell from 39% to 29%.
- The retirement deduction is unchanged: up to the lowest of your contribution, Rs 5 lakh, or one third of income.
Put the saving to work
If your monthly TDS has fallen, the extra take-home pay is worth saving. A fixed deposit at the top rate earns several times what a regular savings account pays: see today's FD rates, or work out a target with the savings goal calculator. Interest on deposits is taxed separately at source (5% with a PAN), as explained in our guide to tax on FD interest.
What this calculator leaves out
It covers employment income, the FY 2083/84 slabs, the retirement-contribution deduction and the SSF exemption from the 1% tax. It does not include other deductions or rebates, such as insurance premiums, the remote-area allowance or any rebate you may qualify for, and it does not handle business or investment income. Treat the result as an estimate and confirm with the Inland Revenue Department or your employer's payroll before filing.
