Third-Party Vehicle Insurance in Nepal: Price Calculator for Bikes and Cars
Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle in Nepal and its price is fixed by the Nepal Insurance Authority, so every insurer charges the same. Pick your vehicle to see what you will pay.
- Third-party premium (NIA tariff)
- –
- Driver and passenger accident cover
- –
- VAT 13%

- Stamp duty (approx.)

- A motorcycle or scooter costs about Rs 1,705 (up to 149cc), Rs 1,931 (150cc to 250cc) or Rs 2,157 (above 250cc) a year.
- A private car under 1000cc costs about Rs 7,355 a year with the compulsory accident cover for the driver and four passengers.
- The price is the same at every non-life insurer, so choose an insurer for its service and claims record, not the premium.
- Third-party insurance pays for injury, death or damage you cause to other people. It does not pay to repair your own vehicle; for that you need comprehensive cover.
- You need a valid policy to renew your bluebook and pay vehicle tax.

Source: NIA Motor Insurance Tariff Directive 2073, Annex 7 (motorcycles) and Annex 8 (private vehicles), non-government vehicles. Accident cover is Rs 700 per person for Rs 5 lakh cover. Final amounts can differ by a few rupees with stamp duty and rounding. The tariff for commercial vehicles, government vehicles and electric vehicles (rated by kW) is different, so ask the insurer.
What third-party insurance covers
- Death or injury of other people caused by your vehicle, including pedestrians. Since the 2073 tariff, death cover is Rs 5 lakh per person and medical treatment cover up to Rs 3 lakh.
- Damage to other people's property, such as another vehicle, a wall or a shop front.
- Driver and passengers: the policy includes accident cover for the driver and people riding in your vehicle.
It does not cover damage to your own vehicle, theft or fire. If your vehicle is on a bank loan, the bank will insist on comprehensive cover.
Third-party vs comprehensive insurance
Comprehensive (full) insurance adds own-damage cover on top of third-party: repairs after an accident, theft, fire and, if you add the risk group, riots and strikes. For a motorcycle the own-damage part of the NIA tariff is 1.5% of the declared value for a bike under five years old, 15% more for 5 to 10 years and 25% more after that, with a minimum of Rs 1,000. No-claim discounts and a voluntary excess bring it down. For cars the own-damage premium is a percentage of the declared value that depends on the engine size, so ask two or three insurers for a written quote.
How to buy or renew
- Choose any licensed non-life insurer. The third-party price is identical, so pick one with a branch near you and a good claims record (see claims paid by insurer).
- Have your bluebook details ready: registration number, engine and chassis number, engine size and seats.
- Pay at a branch or through the insurer's app or website. Keep the policy, paper or digital, in the vehicle.
- Renew before the expiry date. Driving without valid insurance is an offence, and the bluebook cannot be renewed without it.
Frequently asked questions
How much is third-party insurance for a bike in Nepal?
About Rs 1,705 a year for a bike up to 149cc, Rs 1,931 for 150cc to 250cc and Rs 2,157 above 250cc, including 13% VAT and stamp duty.
How much is third-party insurance for a car in Nepal?
About Rs 7,355 a year for a private car under 1000cc, Rs 8,485 for 1000cc to 1600cc and Rs 10,745 above 1600cc, for five seats including the driver.
Is third-party insurance cheaper at some companies?
No. The Nepal Insurance Authority fixes the third-party premium, so every non-life insurer must charge the same. Companies compete on service and claims handling instead.
Does third-party insurance cover my own bike or car?
No. It covers injury, death or damage you cause to others, plus accident cover for the driver and passengers. Repairs to your own vehicle need comprehensive insurance.
Can I renew my bluebook without insurance?
No. You need a valid insurance policy for the vehicle to pay vehicle tax and renew the bluebook.
