How Much Interest on a Fixed Deposit in Nepal? (5, 10 & 25 Lakh Examples)
A plain-numbers answer: exactly how much a 5, 10 or 25 lakh fixed deposit pays in Nepal after tax — and how to work it out for any amount.
- FD interest is simple interest: Amount × Rate ÷ 100 × Years. A NPR 5 lakh FD at 6% for one year earns NPR 30,000 gross.
- After the 5% tax (with a PAN), that NPR 30,000 becomes NPR 28,500 net.
- Double the deposit, double the interest — 10 lakh pays NPR 57,000 net, 25 lakh pays NPR 1,42,500 net at the same rate.
- The rate is the only lever that changes your return — compare it on the live FD tracker.
The worked numbers (at 6.00% for one year)
Nepali banks quote FD interest as a simple annual rate, so the maths is straightforward. Here is what common deposit amounts earn in one year at a 6.00% rate, before and after the 5% withholding tax (assuming a PAN is linked):
| Deposit | Gross interest | Tax (5%) | Net interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| NPR 5 lakh | 30,000 | 1,500 | 28,500 |
| NPR 10 lakh | 60,000 | 3,000 | 57,000 |
| NPR 25 lakh | 1,50,000 | 7,500 | 1,42,500 |
The formula — work it out for any amount
Gross interest = Principal × Rate ÷ 100 × Years. For NPR 7 lakh at 5.5% for 2 years: 700000 × 5.5 ÷ 100 × 2 = NPR 77,000 gross, minus 5% tax = NPR 73,150 net. You can take the interest as a lump sum at maturity, or ask the bank for monthly or quarterly payout if you want regular income — the headline rate is the same, only the timing changes.
The rate is what moves your return
At a fixed amount, your only real lever is the rate. On a NPR 10 lakh one-year FD, moving from a 4.00% commercial-bank rate to a 6.00% finance-company rate lifts your net interest from NPR 38,000 to NPR 57,000 — an extra NPR 19,000 a year for the same money and the same tenure. That is why comparing before you book matters. Finance companies and development banks usually lead; all are DCGC-guaranteed up to NPR 5 lakh per institution.

Frequently asked questions
How much interest will I get on 5 lakh FD in Nepal?
At a 6% annual rate, a NPR 5 lakh fixed deposit earns NPR 30,000 gross in one year, or NPR 28,500 after the 5% withholding tax. At a lower 4% rate it would be NPR 20,000 gross.
How is fixed deposit interest calculated in Nepal?
As simple interest: Principal × Rate ÷ 100 × Years. For NPR 10 lakh at 6% for one year that is NPR 60,000 gross, minus 5% tax = NPR 57,000 net.
Can I get monthly income from a fixed deposit?
Yes. Most banks let you take the interest as a monthly or quarterly payout instead of a lump sum at maturity. The annual rate is the same; only the payout timing differs.
What is the interest on 25 lakh FD in Nepal?
At 6% for one year, a NPR 25 lakh FD earns NPR 1,50,000 gross, or NPR 1,42,500 after the 5% tax. Spreading it across institutions keeps each portion within the NPR 5 lakh DCGC guarantee.
